Costa Rica's highest peak at 3,821 meters, reached by a demanding 19-kilometer trail from the village of San Gerardo de Rivas. Hikers overnight at the Crestones base lodge before a pre-dawn push to watch sunrise over both oceans. The páramo landscape of glacial lakes and dwarf shrubs feels closer to the Andes than the tropics.
