An active volcano neighboring Irazú that reawakened dramatically in the 2010s, periodically dusting the Central Valley with ash. When activity allows, guided hikes approach the summit craters through high-altitude pastures and elfin forest. The surrounding valley is also the heart of Costa Rica's whitewater rafting and cheese-making country.
