A vast UNESCO biosphere reserve in northern Nicaragua that, together with adjoining Honduran forests, forms one of the largest wilderness areas north of the Amazon. Jaguars, harpy eagles, and Mayangna and Miskito communities share its rugged terrain. Expedition-style visits require permits, guides, and several days of travel.
