A riverside village on the Río San Juan dominated by a 17th-century Spanish fortress built to repel pirates heading for Granada. There are no cars, just wooden houses on stilts, rapids in front of the fort, and boats as the only way in or out. It makes a atmospheric base for trips into the Indio Maíz rainforest.
