A lighthouse commissioned in 1895 on the treacherous headland near Gansbaai where HMS Birkenhead struck a submerged rock in 1852, a disaster that gave rise to the 'women and children first' protocol. Visitors can climb the tower for views over the reef-strewn coastline that claimed dozens of ships.
