Standing at the island's flat, shingle-strewn northern tip, the Point of Ayre Lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse on the Isle of Man, first lit in 1818 and engineered by Robert Stevenson. The surrounding heathland and gravel beaches form a stark, wind-scoured landscape quite unlike the rest of the island, and the strong currents offshore often draw seals and seabirds. On clear days the Scottish coast is visible across the channel.
