Once the cultural capital of the French Antilles, Saint-Pierre was destroyed in minutes by the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée, which killed nearly its entire population. Today the town rebuilt among the ruins, and visitors can walk through the shell of its old theatre and the cell of famed survivor Cyparis.
