The largest protected area in the Dominican Republic covers dry forest, cactus scrub, lagoons, and offshore islands in the remote southwest. It shelters flamingos at Laguna de Oviedo, endemic iguanas on Isla Beata, and major sea-turtle nesting beaches including Bahía de las Águilas. Taíno cave art and near-total absence of development make it a serious ecotourism destination.
