The highest peak in the Caribbean at 3,098 meters, rising from the pine forests of the Cordillera Central. The standard route is a two- or three-day mule-supported trek from La Ciénaga through cloud forest and alpine meadows. Summit mornings can drop below freezing, a surprise on a tropical island, with sunrise views stretching across Hispaniola.
