One of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere, begun in the 18th century and famous for its pond of giant Amazon water lilies. Avenues of royal palms, spice trees and dozens of baobab and pandanus species reflect its long role in plant exchange across the tropics. Giant tortoises and deer occupy a corner enclosure.
