More than 120 mostly uninhabited islands scattered across the southern Red Sea, with reefs that have seen almost no dive traffic for decades. Dahlak Kebir holds ruins and cisterns from a medieval island sultanate alongside pearl-fishing villages. Permits and chartered boats from Massawa are required, keeping visitor numbers very low.
