A crater lake sitting about 155 meters below sea level, the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth. Blinding white salt banks ring turquoise water hemmed in by black lava fields. Afar caravans have harvested salt here for centuries, and day trips from Djibouti City cross the dramatic Ghoubbet fault zone.
