A flat-topped mountain monastery founded in the 6th century, accessible only by hauling yourself up a 15-meter cliff on a leather rope. The Aksumite-style church at the summit is among the oldest in the country, and the monastic community still lives from cisterns and terraced plots on the plateau. Entry is restricted to men by monastic rule.
