A range of red sandstone spires and mesas in central Tigray that shelters the densest cluster of rock-hewn churches in Ethiopia. Hikes of an hour or more climb to sanctuaries such as Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor perched on ledges above the plains. The desert-like light at sunrise and sunset draws photographers as much as pilgrims.
