The larger of Rwanda's twin northern crater-dammed lakes, ringed by terraced ridges beneath the Virunga volcanoes. Boat trips weave between inhabited islets where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Views of Muhabura reflected in the water make it a quiet alternative to the busier gorilla-trek circuit nearby.
