Nearly a tenth of Andorra fits inside this one glacial valley system, where crags, high pastures and wooded slopes preserve a mountain world little touched by the modern age. Herders' huts, terraced fields, stone tracks and traces of iron smelting record centuries of high-Pyrenean life, governed in part by communal land ownership reaching back to the 13th century. The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, still without a road, became Andorra's only UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
