Every bottle of Prosecco Superiore starts on these improbably steep slopes between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, north of Venice. Generations of growers tamed the hogback ridges with ciglioni — grassy terraces holding narrow plots of vines — weaving a chequerboard of rows that has evolved since the 17th century, joined in the 1800s by the distinctive bellussera vine-training system. UNESCO inscribed the Prosecco Hills in 2019 as a cultural landscape shaped by hand against demanding terrain.
