Known as the red oasis for its ochre mud-brick architecture, Timimoun overlooks a salt lake and a sea of golden dunes at the edge of the Grand Erg Occidental. Ancient foggara irrigation channels still feed its palm gardens, and Sudanese-style facades line the main street.
