The short-lived capital built by the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten spreads across a desert plain beside the Nile, its temples and palaces reduced to outlines but its rock-cut noble tombs rich with scenes of the Aten cult. Few visitors make it here, giving the site a haunting emptiness.
