Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica

Cicero judged Syracuse the loveliest of Greek cities, and its island heart of Ortygia — settled by Corinthians in the 8th century BC — still folds a Greek Temple of Athena into its baroque cathedral. Inland, the silent gorges of Pantalica hold more than 5,000 rock-cut tombs dating between the 13th and 7th centuries BC. Together the ancient city and the necropolis were inscribed by UNESCO in 2005, three millennia of Mediterranean history in a single World Heritage listing.
