No other island produced anything quite like Sardinia's nuraghi, and Su Nuraxi at Barumini is their supreme expression. Raised in the later 2nd millennium BC around a central stone tower, the Bronze Age fortress gained a four-towered bastion and a huddle of circular dwellings, later reworked as Carthaginian power pressed on the island. Excavated in the 1950s and inscribed by UNESCO in 1997, it offers the clearest walk-through of prehistoric Sardinian life anywhere.
