Roman surveyors normally insisted on a strict grid, but at 900 metres up in the Algerian mountains they let the terrain lead. Ancient Cuicul — today's Djémila, 'the beautiful one' in Arabic — fitted its forum, temples, basilicas, arches and houses to a narrow ridge, producing one of the finest examples of Roman planning bent to mountain country, complete with superb mosaics. UNESCO inscribed Djémila as a World Heritage Site in 1982.
