San Gimignano's patrician families competed in stone: around 72 tower-houses, some 50 metres tall, once declared their wealth and power above this Tuscan hill town on the Via Francigena pilgrim road between Rome and the north. Only 14 towers still stand, yet the feudal atmosphere survives intact, along with Italian masterworks of the 14th and 15th centuries. The historic centre was inscribed by UNESCO in 1990.
