Castel del Monte is medieval geometry made stone. Emperor Frederick II raised the castle near Bari in the 13th century with mathematical and astronomical precision, its perfectly regular octagonal plan charged with symbolic meaning, its architecture blending classical antiquity, the Islamic Orient and northern European Cistercian Gothic into something without parallel in military building. It was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996.
