Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar ruled from Babylon, and between 626 and 539 BCE the city reigned as capital of the Neo-Babylonian Empire at its creative height. Its ruins 85 km south of Baghdad — outer and inner walls, gates, palaces, temples — testify to one of antiquity's most influential powers, while the legend of the Hanging Gardens, counted among the seven wonders of the ancient world, still feeds imaginations everywhere. Babylon was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2019.
