Twice the Romans came for Hatra — in AD 116 and again in 198 — and twice its high, thick, tower-reinforced walls turned them back. Capital of the first Arab Kingdom and shaped by the Parthian Empire, the fortified city is remembered above all for temples in which Hellenistic and Roman architecture merges with Eastern decorative traditions. Hatra was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1985.
