Five caves and a rock shelter in the Khorramabad Valley chart 63,000 years of human presence in the Zagros Mountains. Set in a narrow corridor rich in water, plants and game, they hold Middle and Upper Palaeolithic layers of the Mousterian and Baradostian cultures — decorative objects and advanced stone tools that illuminate early human development and the migration out of Africa into Eurasia. Much still awaits excavation. UNESCO inscribed the sites in 2025.
