Fifty-four caravanserais scattered across thousands of kilometres tell the story of travel in Iran. These roadside inns sheltered caravans, pilgrims and other wayfarers with food and water, sited wherever springs, terrain and security allowed. A small fraction of the many once strung along Iran's ancient roads, they were selected as the most influential examples, spanning centuries, architectural styles, climates and building materials. The Persian Caravanserai was inscribed by UNESCO in 2023.
