Cultural Landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat

The Hawrami, an agropastoral Kurdish tribe, have lived in the high Zagros since about 3000 BCE, and the Hawraman/Uramanat landscape shows how. In two valleys along Iran's western border, twelve villages climb steep slopes in tiers, with terraced gardens behind dry-stone walls, herds of livestock, and seasonal moves between lowland and highland dwellings — millennia of adaptation to scarce mountain land. UNESCO inscribed the cultural landscape in 2021.
