Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars Region

Eight archaeological sites around Firuzabad, Bishapur and Sarvestan carry the memory of the Sassanian Empire, which held the region from 224 to 658 CE. They include the capital established by Ardashir Papakan, the dynasty's founder, and the city and monuments of his successor Shapur I — fortifications, palaces and urban plans that absorbed Achaemenid, Parthian and Roman influences and went on to shape Islamic-era architecture. UNESCO inscribed the landscape in 2018.
