They call it the Burnt City. Shahr-i Sokhta arose around 3200 BC where Bronze Age trade routes crossed the Iranian plateau, and through four periods of settlement down to 1800 BC it developed distinct quarters for monuments, housing, burial and manufacture — eastern Iran's first complex societies taking shape. Shifting watercourses and climate change ended the city, but the dry desert preserved its mudbrick remains superbly. UNESCO inscribed the site in 2014.
