The dome of Soltaniyeh changed Persian architecture. Built in 1302-12 as the mausoleum of Oljaytu in the Ilkhanid capital founded by the Mongols in Zanjan province, the octagonal tomb carries a 50-metre dome sheathed in turquoise-blue faience and ringed by eight slender minarets — the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Iran, described by scholars as anticipating the Taj Mahal. UNESCO inscribed Soltaniyeh in 2005.
