Three huge concentric walls ring Tchogha Zanbil, holy city of the Kingdom of Elam, founded around 1250 BC in what is now Khuzestan and dominated by its great ziggurat. The city was never completed: thousands of unused bricks still lie where builders abandoned them after Ashurbanipal's invasion cut the work short. Tchogha Zanbil was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1979, among Iran's first sites on the list.
