Coastal and Marine Ecosystems of the Bijagós Archipelago – Omatí Minhô

Off Guinea-Bissau spreads the Bijagós Archipelago, the only active deltaic archipelago on Africa's Atlantic coast. Its mangroves, mudflats and intertidal shallows shelter green and leatherback turtles, manatees and dolphins, and feed more than 870,000 migratory shorebirds, while Poilão Island ranks among the planet's most important turtle-nesting sites. The best-preserved marine reaches of the islands were inscribed as a Natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025.
