Quirigua's fame rests on stone: towering carved stelae and sculpted calendar monuments of the 8th century that remain an essential key to Maya civilization. Occupied from the 2nd century AD, the city reached its height under the ruler Cauac Sky (723-84), when it was capital of an autonomous, prosperous state in what is now eastern Guatemala. The archaeological park was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1981.
