Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine

Sixteen log-built churches scattered through the Carpathian foothills of Poland and Ukraine represent the finest of the region's tserkvas, raised by Orthodox and Greek Catholic communities from the 1500s to the 1800s. Built entirely of horizontal timber, each rises in three linked sections crowned by domes or cupolas, sheltering painted interiors and carved iconostasis screens; wooden bell towers and old graveyards often keep them company. UNESCO added the group to the World Heritage List in 2013.
