Antigua Guatemala was laid out in the early 16th century as capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, its Renaissance-inspired grid sitting 1,500 metres up in earthquake country. The great quake of 1773 shattered the city, yet its churches, convents and civic monuments survive as evocative ruins threaded through the baroque streetscape. UNESCO inscribed Antigua on the World Heritage List in 1979.
