Tikal National Park

Deep in the Petén jungle, temple pyramids break through the forest canopy at Tikal, one of the supreme cities of the Maya, inhabited from the 6th century BC until the 10th century AD. Ramps climb to plazas ringed by palaces and shrines, while remains of dwellings lie scattered through the surrounding forest — a pairing of natural and cultural riches that made Tikal a Mixed UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
