Along the Indian Ocean coast where South Africa meets Mozambique, an unbroken chain of habitats runs from coral reefs and beaches through forested dunes, mangroves, lakes and swamps to inland savannah. Sea turtles haul out to nest on the sand, whales and whale sharks cruise offshore, and pelicans, storks and herons crowd the wetlands. iSimangaliso Wetland Park was inscribed by UNESCO in 1999, and the World Heritage Site has since grown across the border to take in Mozambique's Maputo National Park.
