On the hill above Darmstadt, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse founded an artists' colony in 1897 that turned domestic life into an experiment. Its members designed their own houses and studios as early-modernist environments, enlarged for the great exhibitions of 1901, 1904, 1908 and 1914 — the Wedding Tower and the Exhibition Hall among the results. Shaped by Arts and Crafts ideas and by the Vienna Secession, the Mathildenhöhe entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021.
