Naumburg Cathedral, begun in 1028 in the eastern Thuringian Basin, catches medieval architecture mid-transformation: a Romanesque body flanked by two Gothic choirs. The west choir, from the first half of the 13th century, holds life-size statues of the cathedral's founders carved by the anonymous workshop called the Naumburg Master — sculpture of astonishing vividness for its age. The cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018.
