Some of humanity's oldest figurative art came out of the ground in southern Germany. Six caves in the Swabian Jura have yielded animal figurines, musical instruments and personal ornaments made by the first modern humans in Europe between 43,000 and 33,000 years ago — among them half-human, half-animal creatures and a single female statuette carved deep in the last ice age. The caves joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.
