Water is the star at Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, where a giant statue of Hercules crowns a wooded hillside above Kassel. From 1689 Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel harnessed reservoirs behind the monument to feed cascades, fountains and a grotto down a grand axis, and later rulers added a 50-metre jet and Romantic waterfalls — a Baroque hydraulic spectacle proclaiming the power of absolutist rule. UNESCO inscribed Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe as a World Heritage Site in 2013.
