Basalt buttresses and golden sandstone walls give southern Africa's highest mountains their drama, but the Maloti-Drakensberg's rarest treasure hides in caves and rock shelters: the richest concentration of San rock paintings on the subcontinent, created over some 4,000 years. Pairing South Africa's uKhahlamba Drakensberg park with Lesotho's Sehlabathebe, the site protects endemic alpine plants, bearded and Cape vultures and the critically endangered Maloti minnow. UNESCO listed it as a Mixed property in 2000, extending it to Lesotho in 2013.
