Once the most productive colliery in the Ruhr, the Zollverein complex at Essen pairs the complete apparatus of a coal-mining and coking operation with buildings of striking Bauhaus-influenced design. Its steel headframe and geometric halls stand as remarkable evidence of the rise and fall of the heavy industry that powered Germany for a century and a half. UNESCO inscribed the Zollverein coal mine industrial complex as a World Heritage Site in 2001.
