On an island in Lake Constance, the Benedictine monastery of Reichenau — founded in 724 — became one of early medieval Europe's great centres of art and learning. Its three churches, raised chiefly between the 9th and 11th centuries, survey the sweep of monastic architecture of the age, and their wall paintings testify to the brilliance of the island's celebrated school of manuscript illumination. UNESCO inscribed the monastic island of Reichenau as a World Heritage Site in 2000.
