Set among Thuringian forest, Wartburg is close to the ideal of a German castle, keeping fragments of its feudal fabric within a form largely recreated in the 19th century. Its greatest claim to fame is quieter: sheltering here in disguise, Martin Luther rendered the New Testament into German, an act that helped shape the modern language. UNESCO inscribed Wartburg Castle as a World Heritage Site in 1999.
