Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin

Frederick the Great built his summer retreat of Sanssouci at Potsdam between 1745 and 1747, hosting Voltaire in its vine-terraced rooms, and later rulers kept adding to it. The result is a sweeping ensemble of some 150 buildings across 500 hectares of parkland, laid out between 1730 and 1916 and reaching along the Havel into Berlin. UNESCO inscribed the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin as a World Heritage Site in 1990.
