Founded in 1106 in western Georgia, Gelati is a masterpiece of the kingdom's medieval golden age, a time of political might and prosperity spanning the 11th to 13th centuries. Its churches, faced in smoothly cut stone and decorated with blind arcading, sheltered a celebrated academy that made the monastery one of the foremost centres of learning in the medieval Orthodox world. UNESCO inscribed Gelati Monastery as a World Heritage Site in 1994.
