Long isolation preserved Upper Svaneti, a high pocket of the Georgian Caucasus where medieval villages bristle with stone tower-houses. At Chazhashi alone more than 200 of these tall structures survive, built to serve at once as homes and as strongholds against the raiders who long troubled the region, set against a backdrop of glaciated peaks. UNESCO inscribed Upper Svaneti as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
